Descrição: Globally, aquatic environments have been influenced by several anthropogenic impacts, mainly due to the destruction of habitats and discharges of untreated domestic/industrial effluents. Such anthropogenic interference has drastically and intensely impacted ecosystems. Toxic concentrations of chemical compounds can lead to a reduction in biodiversity, extinction of less tolerant species, disruption of the ecosystems and lead to sublethal damage (biochemical, genetic, cellular, histological, physiological, immunological, hormonal, behavioral and / or reproductive) in the organisms. Moreover, daily and seasonal changes in the physical and chemical water characteristics can be modulate the toxicity of contaminants, which brings additional concerns regarding the environmental quality and its effects to aquatic biota. Constant ineffective environmental management is observed worldwide, where thousands of species, countless ecosystems and millions of people suffer with the economic and socio-environmental consequences. Given this scenario, crustaceans have been used as sentinel species to establish conservation status of aquatic ecosystems. Species belonging to this group are distinguished by having numerous specific characteristics that highlight them as excellent environmental indicators. This course proposal aims to present current tools of environmental prognosis, mainly using pre-pathological indicators because they have the ability to detect biological dysfunctions in response to a stressor before population or/and ecological damage occurs. The integration of these information will provide to the participants a holistic view of anthropogenic impacts and the use of these techniques on crustaceans to establish an ecosystem assessment. In addition, participants are expected to envisage the use of these crustacean tools for scientific research and environmental management.
Biografia (Dr. Duarte): Possui graduação em Ciências Biológicas com Bacharelado em Biologia Marinha pela Universidade Santa Cecilia (2004). Mestre pelo Instituto de Pesca de São Paulo, onde desenvolveu estudos sobre a biologia e pesca de lagostas do gênero Scyllarides spp (2008). Atuou como biólogo em uma empresa de consultoria ambiental, professor de ciências e biologia da rede pública e privada, docente em ensino técnico, graduação (Universidade Particular e Pública) e pós-graduação. Atuou como analista pesqueiro do “Programa de Monitoramento Embarcado da Pesca Industrial para a Gestão Pesqueira do Estado de São Paulo (MEPI)”, no Instituto de Pesca de Santos (SP), financiado pelo Ministério da Pesca e Aquicultura. Doutor em Ciências Biológicas (Zoologia) pela UNESP/RC, onde contou com o auxílio/bolsa da FAPESP para o desenvolvimento de sua tese sobre o impacto cito e genotóxico dos metais pesados em populações do caranguejo-uçá em manguezais do Estado de São Paulo. Além disso, realizou doutorado sanduíche na University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), onde desenvolveu o estudo: “Mechanisms of metal tolerance in marine invertebrates in Sydney, Australia”. Atuou como coordenador de Projetos da Conservação Internacional (CI-Brasil), onde desenvolveu principalmente o “Programa Pesca+Sustentável” com a parceria da Google em áreas de Reservas Extrativistas Costeiras e Marinhas Brasileiras. Realizou o pós-doutorado no curso de Análise Ambiental Integrada na Universidade Federal de São Paulo, onde desenvolve o estudo: “Tolerância biológica, efeitos subletais e bioacumulação em Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) expostos a contaminantes, via água e alimentação”. Com o intuito de complementar este estudo, desenvolveu no Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (CSIC) (Espanha) uma parte do seu pós doutorado (BEPE sanduíche): “Subcellular partitioning and specific biomarkers to trace metals exposure in the mangrove sentinel Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763)” com o auxílio da FAPESP e supervisão de Dr. Julián Blasco Moreno.Posteriormente, realizou seu segundo pós-doutorado no Instituto de Pesca de Santos (SP), onde liderou a equipe no estudo “Caracterização da Ictiofauna Pelágica da Bacia de Santos”. Em seguida, se dedicou na docência de um curso EAD sobre “Bioestatística na prática utilizando o ambiente R”. Atualmente, desenvolve seu terceiro pós doutorado sobre “Bioacumulação, partição subcelular e biomarcadores em diferentes níveis de organização biológicas de invertebrados aquáticos expostos a nanopartículas metálicas” financiado pela FAPESP. Além disso, é professor credenciado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência e Tecnologia Ambiental (PPG-CiTA), nos níveis de Mestrado e Doutorado na Área de Ciências Ambientais, onde ministra a disciplina “Técnicas estatísticas aplicadas a Ciências Ambientais”.
Biografia (Dra. Henrique):She is a permanent lecture at Universidade Santa Cecília and member of the Laboratory of Marine and Coastal Organisms. Dr Sadauskas-Henrique completed her PhD in 2014 at National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA, Manaus-AM), before conducting a postdoctoral fellowship at the same institute in collaboration with University of British Columbia (UBC, Canada-Vancouver). In 2019/2020 she held an honors position at La Trobe University (Australia). Dr Sadauskas-Henrique published more than 25 publications and 3 book chapters. Her research interests are focused on the toxicological effects of the contaminants, and their interactions with water physical-chemical characteristics, to the aquatic organisms. Biomarkers such as genetical, biochemical, physiological, and histological, are used as tools to verify this toxicity. Her research is also focused in understanding the interactions between the natural organic matter, with different spectroscopical features, and the aquatic organisms under environmental challenges.
Descrição: Macroalgae play a key role in marine environments by providing microhabitats that allow the colonization of a diverse fauna of benthic invertebrates. Amphipod crustaceans are usual representatives this fauna, and they use the macroalgae as food and shelter during part of their lives or during the whole life cycle. Amphipods are numerous both in abundance as well as in species richness associated to macroalgae, and they are used as models to test ecological theories, to access environmental quality, and they are recently being used to predict effects of climate change in marine communities. However, the results of these studies may vary depending on the trophic level that species occupy, and especially depending on the intrinsic factors of each species. Thus, the correct identification of amphipod species associated with macroalgae is essential to a variety of studies.
Biografia (Dra. Siqueira): Graduada em Ciências Biológicas modalidade Licenciatura pela Universidade Federal de Goiás (2000), com mestrado (2007) e doutorado em Ecologia pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2012) e pós-doutorado em Sistemática pelo Museu Nacional/UFRJ (2012 a 2017). Atualmente é Pesquisadora Colaboradora no Departamento de Biologia Animal, IB/ UNICAMP. Tem experiência em Ecologia com ênfase em ecossistemas marinhos, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: ecologia de sistemas bentônicos, ecologia e taxonomia de Amphipoda, ecotoxicologia e divulgação científica (Instagram e facebook @mandakaru.ciencia).

Arai): Possui graduação em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2014) e mestrado em Ciências Biológicas (Zoologia) pelo Museu Nacional – Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2017). Atualmente é estudante de doutorado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia Animal pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), e estudante de graduação em Pedagogia Bilíngue (Português-Libras) pelo Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos (INES), polo UNIFESP (EaD). Tem experiência nas áreas de Sistemática e Evolução de crustáceos anfípodes.
Descrição: To understand the theory focusing on mitochondrial organelles and to practice the use of multiple bioinformatic tools to assemble and annotate the entire mitochondrial genome of crustaceans obtained via classical Sanger sequencing or next generation sequencing technologies (ILLUMINA). The analyses include the exploration of mitochondrial gene order (synteny), annotation of protein coding gene regions, analysis of selective pressures, circular depiction of annotated mitogenomes, and phylogenomic analyses [using Maximum Likelihood].

Biografia: J. Antonio Baeza is an evolutionary biologist. He is interested in testing sex allocation & mating systems theories using invertebrates as model systems. He is also interested in understanding the role of the environment in determining the evolution of social behaviors within a phylogenomic framework. Most recently, he has been using genomic tools, and especially mitochondrial genomes, to understand genealogical relationships within clades of crustaceans. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, Clemson University in South Carolina, USA.
Descrição: The course will focus on anticipating readers’ needs and expectations to improve manuscript readability. Special emphasis will be given to the writing of the discussion. The course will include the following topics: reading strategies - skimming and scanning; planning the manuscript - creating an outline; paragraph structure - topic statement, logical development, and conclusion; sentence length - identifying wordiness; sentence flow - keeping coherence and cohesion. Online resources will be presented to help future writings.
Biografia: Camila Timm Wood is a carcinologist who has dedicated her time to helping people to better communicate in English. She started her research with crustaceans in 2005 as an undergrad student at the Carcinology lab of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Her first project was with biodegradable plastics and terrestrial isopods. Her project thesis was related to the feeding performance of woodlice and the ecological biochemistry of decomposing leaves. After finishing her teaching and bachelor’s degrees at the same university, she embarked on an adventure to study abroad. As an Erasmus Mundus master’s student, she had the opportunity to study in France, England, Portugal, and Germany. For her master thesis in Ecology, she was able to run experiments with woodlice and biodegradable plastics at the University of Salzburg, Austria. Between her MSc and Ph.D., she spent time teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at an English school. This period was a great opportunity to learn more about teaching and to encourage the use of English to discuss science-related topics. Going back to academia, she studied the molting process and cuticle structure of woodlice and their relation to ecological parameters for her Ph.D. in Animal Biology at UFRGS. Her studies took her abroad once more as visiting researcher at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and the University of Ulm, Germany. Throughout her studies, she gathered material and accumulated experience in scientific writing. This was first intended to improve her own writing skills but later became the focus of her current work. She has been working with manuscript revision and editing since she finished her Ph.D. in 2017. Manuscript revision is not limited to correcting grammar and vocabulary, it is about improving the overall readability of the manuscript. To achieve that, her revision frequently consists of two steps. The first step includes comments on parts that are ambiguous, difficult to understand, or lack of cohesion. Notes on paragraph structure and examples of appropriate topic sentences or conclusion statements are provided to help the author refine specific parts. The second step follows a more objective proofreading process that focuses on correcting the remaining issues with grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. In addition to scientific editing, Camila works as an English teacher with a focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and proficiency examination prep. In 2020, she joined Edge, an English school that tailors the classes to the specific needs of the individual students, small groups, or groups from companies. There are limitations to working as a scientific editor, so approaching scientific writing as a collaborative effort has been showing promising results.

Descrição: The objectives of this workshop is to learn and apply knowledge about the taxonomy, diversity and ecology of burrowing shrimps of the infraorders Axiidea and Gebiidea, make possible: 1) learn to identify common burrowing shrimps (Axiidea - Gebiidea) from the tropical and subtropical habitats of American coasts, some of which occur in the Brazilian coast; 2) learn general biological and ecological characteristics of the group; and 3) gain hands-on ecological and taxonomic experience with south American burrowing shrimps.
Biografia:Patricio Hernáez é biólogo marinho, com atuação em áreas como biologia evolutiva, dinâmica de populações exploradas/naturais, e padrões ecológicos a escala local e regional. Ele tem desenvolvido atividades acadêmicas e profissionais em sistemas oceanográficos de águas temperadas e tropicais, tanto em ambientes intertidais, de águas rasas e de águas profundas. Ele publicou artigos e capítulos de livros em jornais de revisão por pares. Também, ele é revisor em jornais de de arbitragem e tem participado em congressos e reuniões nacionais e internacionais. Ele é atualmente professor substituto na Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, e pós-doutorando no Museu de Oceanografia da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE, Brasil, e pesquisador associado na Universidad de Tarapacá - UTA, Chile.
